Wolf Story

November 28, 2005

I read a very cool story on Sawbill Canoe Outfitters’ newsletter/blog this morning. All the more reason I would love to spend some time living up in that neck of the woods, on the edge of the Boundary Waters. I can’t imagine you experience things like this without spending some serious time in the place.

About half a mile up Sawbill we crossed a set of animal tracks. It was a deer, closely followed by a wolf. A little farther on, we saw the same set of tracks crossing back across Sawbill toward Alton Lake. When we entered the bay heading for the Sawbill to Alton portage, we saw them again. We followed them and could see that the deer was slipping on the lightly snow covered ice. We could also see where it kicked back at the wolf. At the shoreline, the deer leaped over a fallen tree and the wolf carefully picked its way around.

Read the whole thing on the Sawbill site.

Sawbill seems like a pretty cool place, even though I’ve never been there. For one, they have their quasi-blog, which is always entertaining and provides a nice window into life in the Quetico-Superior. The entire place is run on solar energy. And it’s way out in the woods. Maybe our next trip will go out of that area.

Ha- we both caught that story - You called it a wolf story and in my title I chose to focus on the deer. Maybe you think of it a wolf story because his/her story will go on, whereas this was the deer’s final chapter. In my post I turned it into a ‘man’ story, mostly because I thought that it was pretty stupid of the author to go out on the thin ice just to get those photos.

By the way I camped at the Sawbill campground one October a few years back and it was a great experience. I don’t know how it would be during the busy season though.

By the way, thanks for coming by my site and posting a comment, bum! I’ll be looking for that book.

for the obvious reason (to those who know me) i would consider this both a wolf AND a deer story - seeing as we all have to eat to live, and balance is a thing i love. i’m new to your site - can’t wait to catch up on things :)
