I got looking for trico hatch info, thinking it would be productive to go tomorrow morning; your blog is better than any report I've seen on the web...which may be saying a lot. I've had a wisconsin fly fishing license for the past ten years or so, and fairly regularly checked web sites for recenty reports. I agree, the trico hatch is a great time of year for those ten to fourteen inch browns boiling the surface of the Rush, (Rattlesnake?) River. Coincidentally, I also grew up in Stillwater- have you done any smallie fishing on the st. croix? That float from Osceola to Copas is one of my favorites too...you're a real benefit to the sport. Mike McKinney.

[...] As you may have picked up by now, participating in a hatch of this magnitude was a pretty new thing to me. I’ve fished tricos before and it had been a good time but had also lived up to its reputation for challenge. Today, my biggest challenge was one of numbers, specifically the sheer number of natural insects on the water. My fly just couldn’t stand out in the crowd and it was only by a little luck and persistence that I managed to convince a few fish to eat mine instead of the millions of others that were on the water.
I finally had the time to read this today, and I enjoyed it a lot. Even though I've never fly fished, I felt like I was there and learned a thing or two. Those photos are SO late summer!

Take care.

Bum, I always love your fishing posts. Flyfishing for you is something I want to always understand more of, and the more you write about it, the closer I come to knowing your experience. Maybe one of these days we'll give it a try together again.

I enjoyed this post a lot, I felt like I was right there, tromping through those weeds. I wrote my first trout fishing post (http://www.electriclazyland.com/2005/07/with-both-hands.html) a few weeks ago about a trip that I took in July and your post refreshed some of my memories from that trip.

Sadly my summer has been too busy to post much else, much less time to venture off with rod-in-hand. Thanks for the chance to live vicariously through your words and photos! (Great photo of the spider web by the way)

Thanks for sharing your outing!

I always seem to have 1, maybe 2 songs that never leave my head when I'm out fishing alone. Instead of trying to force them out (since some of them just plain suck and I don't know why they're in there), I just sing along and hope it fades away. :)

I would bet you're a better fly angler than you think...
