Nobody sits like this rock sits

May 12, 2005

You rock / rock. / The rock just sits and is. / You show us how to just sit here / and that’s what we need.

It is cold here in Minnesota right now. I don’t know if the rest of the nation is aware of that. It is windy, rainy, damp, dreary. And it is cold. Of course I’ve been planning on going fishing Saturday. I was thinking that the Trout Gods sure have seemed to have it out for me so far this season. I’ve hit a lot of nasty weather when I’ve tried to get out, and the nasty fishing days have usually been adjacent to very nice — “perfect” — days.

But then I realized that the Trout Gods (which are really all the natural deities) don’t have it out for me. They just don’t care. That’s the really humbling thing. I am a piece of this world, equal to all the other pieces. The patterns of weather, the fish, the growing season, the bugs, everything else. None if it has any more weight than any other thing, which is what maintains the balance.

So what will I do? Tonight, I will wear slippers that I didn’t think I would wear again until next fall and I’ll put a sweater on. I’ll turn the heat up a bit, have some tea. Saturday, I will go fishing. I’ll wear long underwear and a hat and a rain jacket, bring along wool gloves. And I will be happy to be on a trout stream.

Thank you for the perspective. I like your attitude.

They really don’t care. That’s simultaneously frightening and relieving.

Thanks. The idle thoughts of an idle guy on an idle Thursday night.

I think the greatest revelation of that writing was that though I am always amazed by how balance is everywhere in the world, I finally realized that what makes the balance possible is that nothing “weighs” more than anything else.

Now the question is: how long will I last out there tomorrow when I’m shivering, chilled, my hands soggy from the rain, battling the wind on every cast.

    I’ll let you know.

as much as I love to plagiarize, I should mention that the poem which serves as the title of this post comes from the esteemable movie, “I Heart Huckabees.”

This bit about them not caring, fits in with what I have been reading this week. A book called “The living Great Lakes” He mentions at one point about how some people are terrified at the thought that the lake (Michigan at that point I think) does not care.

Jerry Dennis is the Author. Good read.

BTW I have been having trouble getting to your blog sometimes latey. Not sure why.

I felt like reading your stuff last night but it kept timing out.

    Glad to get here today.

Thanks for the heads-up on that book… Sounds pretty cool.

Not sure what’s up with blog slowness. I’ve been encountering some of the same stuff. I don’t know if it’s having a hard time connecting to the database or what. I’m also not sure what I can do to fix it. Bear with me.
