I want to repeat my support and admiration for the Hudson Bay Expedition boys, who have recently begun their canoeing journey from St. Cloud, Minnesota to Hudsons Bay, retracing the path Eric Sevareid and Walter Port took in 1930, written about in the great book Canoeing With the Cree.
Seventy-five years after Sevareid and Port spent a wild summer navigating the 2200 mile route, these two fellows, Todd Foster and Scott Miller, have decided it sounded like fun. They left their homes in St. Cloud last weekend, though they are officially beginning the trip this Saturday with a big party on the Mississippi River at Fort Snelling. Katie and I hope to paddle a bit of the river with them and their armada.
They’re a bit more technologically advanced than the 1930 explorers, and that means they have a satellite internet connection by which they are posting regular trip reports. Their first few days have already been quite the adventure, from capsizing in the first set of rapids to portaging through a college party in a park.
Anyway, I’m just a little envious, but awfully glad to have the opportunity to live vicariously. The route is really something and I’m looking forward to following their travels. Happy trails!
That kind of awakens the old adventurous spirit.
