where to start with yesterday. we slept in but i woke up every few hours starting before light to the sound of the wind whipping outside. our bedroom is on the northwest corner and it seemed so exposed and like the wind was trying to tear it right off the building. slept fitfully.
got up at eleven or so and katie made breakfast of those freezer croissants but she put some cinnamon on some and wrapped up cheese and turkey bacon in the others and baked them like that and they were delicious. ate those and watched some of the vikings. katie needed out and she told me she was going for a hike at afton.
right after she drove away she called on her cell and told me that something funky was going on on the street, one intersection was taped off with police tape and a squad car was blocking the intersection on the other end of the street. my curiousity took hold and i threw on jeans and sweater and shoes and coat and went out to take a look. the wind was really something. it roared so loud and constant that it gave the illusion of real silence, drowning out all other sound.
i walked down our block and turned on saratoga and saw the police tape and the squad, the scene just as she described it, and nothing else. i walked down and saw no indication of what the hell was up but i decided since i was out and halfway there already, i’d walk to the video store. by the time i got there, walking into the wind, my face was burned and my ears were stinging.
for once, i knew what movies i wanted and didn’t spend 20 minutes looking only to walk away with a poor choice. i picked up the graduate and unforgiven and was back out the door. i walked back past the cop car and still nothing moved except the leaves and the garbage swirling in the street. as i walked past the cop, an unmarked rolled up and the two began chatting. that was all. i took the long route home and saw nothing… no helicopters tracking fugitives, no fires or swat teams. just that damned wind.
back in the apartment i kicked back. i put my slippers on. i’ve decided that a good pair of slippers makes a very real and noticeable difference in the quality of your winter. i watched the vikings some more and they lost. the wind carried on outside, howling through our balcony. the trees were being lashed… the big white pines right across from our apartment and the many leaveless trees in the neighborhood. the sky was a featureless indifferent gray. possessing no depth.
woke up, got up, near eleven o’clock
butt naked except i was wearing my socks
and that’s cool, ’cause most the time this floor is cold
stand up and stretch look around this mess
